Progress on Agricultural Fiber Standard

Last year, Ozeryansky Engineering was contracted by the Ecological Building Network (EBN) to develop a new ASTM Standard: Guide to Use of Agricultural Fiber in Construction. In February, the draft was finished and it has now gone through the first round of balloting, please see the ASTM press release for more information. EBN is currently engaged in fundraising to help us continue this effort.

Standards are useful for encouraging adoption of new technologies in the building industry and are therefore an important tool in the sustainability movement. ASTM has embraced this use of standards by establishing subcommittee E60.01 on Sustainability and Construction.

The new standard guide will be useful in in the following ways:
• Companies that want to bring agricultural fiber products to market will have a way of documenting performance and reliability;
• Alternative building industries will use the proposed standard, once it has been approved, to improve quality and distribution; and
• Regulators will be able to use it to help with approvals and safety of alternative materials.

The use of agricultural raw materials (ARM) is growing within the construction realm because of an industry-wide interest in using sustainable materials and practices. Enormous quantities of ARM fibers are residues of food production and are often burned or landfilled because of a lack of demand for their use. As members of the E60.01 subcommittee we are committed to implementing business practices which foster greater use of ARM. Through our designs and specifications we are able to be part of a growing market pull for these products.

This year, the USDA will implement the Biobased Product Labeling Program for consumer products; it will display the certified percentage of ARM materials in products ranging from paper plates to building materials.
