Sustainability: For us, sustainability is not just a buzzword. It's a guiding set of principles at the core of everything we do.
Whether the project is to be LEED or Build-It-Green certified, or not, we are proactive with the design and construction team to find opportunities to create a greener building.
Our commitment to sustainability is defined by adherence to the triple-bottom-line. To us this means:
Economic - We provide economical, practical solutions to make green buildings more affordable. It means giving each client the highest value based on their particular budget and scope limitations. It can mean taking a best guess at soil properties instead of hiring a geotechnical engineer, or it can mean designing a home renovation for (voluntary) seismic force levels slightly below the building code requirements for new homes when the costs of bringing the home up to code would make the project not feasible. It often means not letting the perfect stand in the way of the good.
Organizational - We dedicate a fraction of our energies and resources to working in the community to increase awareness and access of all people to healthy, comfortable, and even beautiful spaces to live, work, and play in. It also means building relationships through each project to strengthen the community. It means being inclusive, sharing resources, and trusting our partners.
Environmental - This is usually the first thing that comes to mind when people here the term "Sustainability". In the San Francisco Bay Area, we talk about lowering our carbon footprint and protecting forests. In Memphis, the conversation tends toward saving money on energy bills, or making building environments more healthy and with better indoor air quality. We also play a supportive role by helping the designers maximize passive solar performance and control for moisture for improved durability.
